Session two addressed the use of Social Impact Management in Communities. In the last few years, social impact management has been mainly practised by urban nonprofit organizations. Starting with the utilization of funding initiated by the Dormant Deposits Law, evaluation of social impact has been attracting attention from the nonprofit sector throughout Japan. However, evaluation, implementation and utilization methods as well as the application to management are still in development. In this session, we invited guest speakers from organizations involved in social impact management in local communities to discuss how to effectively use the approach in local communities, as well as issues that need to be addressed in its future dissemination and development.

This session’s featured speakers were Ms. Michiko Yamaguchi, Executive Director of the Higashi-Omi Sanpo Yoshi Foundation, Mr. Daisuke Takayama, Director/staff of the Hokkaido NPO Fund, and Ms. Ayano Sato of NPO Management Support, Anoya. Ms. Yuriko Minamoto, Professor at the Graduate School of Governance Studies, Meiji University and a member of the SIMI Governing Councils served as the commentator, and Mr. Masao Kawai, Representative of Office Musubime served as moderator.

The session began with Ms. Minamoto explaining how one can manage social impact by using evaluation and by having different stakeholders participate in the process. Each speaker also shared their views and practice of the social impact management.
Examples provided by the speakers in this session shed light on the possibilities of how social impact management can be utilized in local communities.
